Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is the oldest continually practiced medicine in the world. The ancient Chinese believed that there is a universal life energy called Chi or Qi present in every living creature. This energy circulates throughout the body along specific pathways which are called meridians. As long as this energy flows smoothly and freely through the meridians, health is maintained. If the flow of energy is blocked or uneven, the system is in disharmony causing pain and illness.
Acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Medicine work to promote the flow of Qi and thus the body’s overall health and wellness.
Acupuncture is the insertion of fine needles into the body at specific points along the body’s meridians to direct Qi (energy) flow throughout the body.
Chinese Herbal Medicine
Chinese Herbal Medicine (CHM) incorporates ingredients from plants, such as the leaf, stem, flower, and root. Each herbal medicine prescription is a mixture of many herbs tailored to the individual patient.
Cupping is one of the oldest methods of traditional Chinese medicine. The earliest recorded use of cupping dates to the early fourth century. In China, cupping is used primarily to treat respiratory conditions such as bronchitis, asthma, and congestion; arthritis; gastrointestinal disorders; and certain types of pain and more.
As with traditional acupuncture, needles are inserted on specific points along the body. The needles are then attached to a device that generates electric pulses using small clips. These devices are used to adjust the frequency and intensity of the impulse being delivered, depending on the condition being treated. Electro-acupuncture uses two needles at time so that the impulses can pass from one needle to the other.
A combination of massage, acupressure and other forms of body manipulation, tuina works by applying pressure to acu-points, meridians and groups of muscles or nerves to remove blockages that prevent the free flow of qi. Removing these blockages restores the balance of qi in the body, leading to improved health and vitality.
